Top 10 Most Disappointing Nfl Teams in 2008 Season
Written by admin on March 7, 2010 – 10:20 pm -
The year 2008 in the NFL was a year of big surprises and disappointments. We saw history made, major fall offs and plenty of coaches fired. Here are the most disappointing teams in 2008.
10. Cleveland Browns
The Clevland Browns finished the season at 10-6 last year. There were plenty of high hopes in Cleveland. The dogs were starting to think that things were looking up. Well now, not so much. They finished the season at 4-12, fired their head coach and hired another head coach, Eric Mangini, that just got fired from the Jets.
9. Washington Redskins
The expectations for the Redskins were not very high this year. They just hired a new unproven head coach in Jim Zorn bringing in a new offense with the verdict still out on their quarterback Jason Campbell. Most people were expecting them to finish where they did, 8-8 at the bottom of the toughest division in the NFL, the NFC East.
So why is this team on this list. They started the season at 6-2 with some tough road wins against Philly and Dallas. Then they went on to lose 6 of their last eight games. Not good. Especially in Washington.
8. Green Bay Packers
The good news is that the Brett Favre saga is finally over. The bad news is that so were the Packers winning ways this season. Aaron Rogers appeared to have done his part with a 93.8 QB rating. But what about the intangibles?
Does Aaron Rogers have the leadership skills and fire that Brett possessed during his time at Green Bay to lead this team? Only time will tell in say about 16 more years.
7. Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks have been a given to make the playoffs with 5 consecutive playoff appearances. Now they finished the season at 4-12 as one of the worst teams in football. What a disappointing way for Mike Holmgren to finish his NFL coaching career. Now they have a new head coach in which they have to adjust to hopefully right the ship.
6. Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos started the season hot at 3-1 with one of the best offenses in the league. They lost 3 straight down the stretch putting them out of position to make the playoffs finishing the season at 8-8. As a result of their poor season the Broncos fired the face of the franchise, Mike Shanahan after 14 seasons and 2 Super Bowls. Talk about a disappointing season.
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Bucaneers start the season at 9-3 and were already penciled in for a playoff position. That is until they lose the next four games straight with the last 2 games at home. The last game they lost was against the Oakland Raiders, of all teams, who finished the season at 5-11. Now it looks like Jon Gruden is on the hot seat - again.
4. Jacksonville Jaguars
Jacksonville was considered one of the top 5 teams in the league coming into the 2008 season. They were ranked 5 in the ESPN power rankings. They finished with an 11-5 record last year and made it to the second round of the playoffs.
This year they decided to do a complete turnaround and finished with a 5-11 record. Now they have to deal with poor free agent signings from the past, salary cap issues, and have decided to start building through the nfl draft.
3. New York Jets
There was new life in New York and I am not talking about for the New York Giants. I am talking about the other New York, the Jets. They made a huge splash signing the future hall of fame quarterback Brett Favre. The Jets got off to a hot start at 8-3.
Talk of an all New York Super Bowl began with the Jets versus the Giants. The New York Brets were alive and kicking. But the season was not over and the Jets lost 4 of their next 5 games with Brett Favre throwing 9 interceptions over this period. Oh, and then they fired their head coach!
2. Detroit Lions
Detroit finished the season with a perfect season. Sort of like the Dolphins 72 season in reverse, 0-16. They went down in the history books as the only team every to go 0-16. Sure, no one expected much from this team but to go all year and not win 1 game. One? Man. It sure sucks to be a Lions fan these days.
1. Dallas Cowboys
And then there was one. The one and only. America’s team! The Dallas Cowboys were many people’s preseason favorite to win the Super Bowl. This team finished the 2007 season with a record of 13-3 with one of the losses being a meaningless game on the last game of the season. Their team is stacked with superstars on both sides of the ball.
Yeah, but when you have a bunch of head cases on your team like T.O. and Pacman Jones you are sure to have some problems. I used to always defend Terrell Owens and try to give him the benefit of the doubt. But if you destroy the locker room chemistry at every team that you go to then maybe you have some issues that you need to address. The problems with Terrell Owens complaining about not getting the ball and the Pacman Jones distractions were just too much for this team.
Not to mention Wade Phillips is probably not the right coach for a place like Dallas. Someone a little more hard-nosed, similar to Parcells or Cowher, is needed in big D. To go from the Super Bowl favorite to not even making the playoffs. And not only did they not make the playoffs, they got destroyed by Philadelphia in the last game of the season (44-6) when they had everything to play for. Now that is what I call a disappointing season.

5 Fascinating Stories About Past Washington Redskins Players
Written by admin on March 7, 2010 – 10:20 pm -
The Washington Redskins has had much success as a football team. Furthermore, many of its players have had successful years after their playing days.
Whatever happened to your favorite nfl football player, after he retired from the gridiron? Particular teams, such as the Washington Redskins, have had a history of success in the NFL. That includes five Super Bowl appearances, three Super Bowl victories, and 10 Division Championships. In fact, the pro football Hall of Fame includes 22 former Washington Redskins players. Have you ever wondered what happened to past players? What did they do after they hung up their helmets and football cleats? Here is where some Hall of Fame Washington Redskins of yesteryear have been, up until today:
1. Darrel Green (Cornerback): 1983-2002
During his illustrious career with the Redskins, Green grabbed 64 interceptions, ran 621 interception yards, and scored six touchdowns. Green founded the Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation, a religious charity, in 1988. He has also been involved with:
?Baltimore-Washington 2012 Summer Olympics board
?NFL September 11th Relief Fund
?Presidential Council on Service and Civic Participation
?Wolf Trap Foundation boards
2. Christian “Sonny” Jurgensen (Quarterback): 1964-1974
Sonny Jurgensen racked up an incredible 32,224 passing yards and 255 touchdowns, during his career with the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles. Since retiring from football, Jurgensen has served as a color commentator with CBS television. Along with Sam Huff, another Hall of Fame Redskins player, Jurgensen continues to cover Washington Redskins games, on the radio.
3. Art Monk (Wide Receiver): 1980-1993
Monk was certainly one of the greatest Wide Receivers of all time, set an NFL record for the most consecutive games with a catch (183). Today, Monk has been helping people off the field, as much as he helped his team on the field. Along with three teammates, Monk founded the Good Samaritan Foundation, which is a non-profit organization that provides people with job training. Also, a football camp for youngsters bears his name.
4. John Riggins (Running Back): (1976-1979, 1981-1985)
Nicknamed “The Diesel,” Riggins rushed for over 11,300 yards during his career, with an average carry of 3.9 yards. Since retiring, Riggins has appeared in “Guiding Light” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” on TV, as well as some “off-off Broadway” productions. Riggins also served as a commentator of “The John Riggins Show,” which ESPN Radio aired in the Washington D.C. area.
5. Charley Taylor (Wide Receiver): 1964-1975, 1977
During his career with the Redskins, Taylor pulled in 649 catches, earned 9,110 receiving yards, and crossed the endzone 79 times. After retiring from the NFL as a player, Taylor served as a scout for the Washington Redskins, and then as a receiver coach for the team, from 1981-1994. Since then, Taylor has served as a consultant to the Washington Redskins, has given formal speeches, and has even sold vehicles and boats.
We often wonder what happened to our favorite music, television, and sports stars, after they retired. For instance, many former Washington Redskins players have donated their time and money, to give back to society. Remember those players as you use your NFL merchandise to cheer on your favorite team!

Philadelphia Eagles Vs New York Giants Nfl Playoff Breakdown
Written by admin on March 7, 2010 – 10:20 pm -
Love this weekends inter-conference rematch of two really good season games. They both won games on the other teams home field this season. These teams know each other better than any other playoff game this weekend. Odds makers obviously are calling this the same as they have the Giants as a three point favorite. After last years super bowl run the Giants now see themselves as the hunted not the hunters. On the hand Philly sees themselves as last years Giants and are saying why not us this year.
This game will be very simple for Philly defensively. They must stop the three headed running back monster the Giants have to win this game. They will load up to stop the run on 1st and 2nd down and hope to put Manning in third and long so they can bring the vaunted Jim Johnson blitz. Offensively since the benching of McNabb six games ago this team has started putting it together. The secret though is not McNabb its Westbrook. He is really the only game breaker they have on offense. Look at last week Minnesota had Philly right where they wanted them the whole game and then one poor tackling play and Westbrook breaks a screen pass into a 75 yard touchdown.
Giants enter this post season with a week off and much healthier they have been in probably five weeks. Offensively they must run the ball effectively to sit up the play action pass for Manning. With the loss of Burress for the season this team no longer can convert 3rd and longs so its a must to run the ball to have more manageable 3rd downs. Defensively there is no secret they must get pressure with there front seven and contain Westbrook. Game plan sounds easy but its usually easier said than done.
The spread says just what everybody else has been saying this one will be close down to the wire. Most game don’t live up to the hype but with the history of these two teams think this one will. There will be no surprises in this game it will be smash mouth football and the last team standing might win. Can’t ignore the trends for the divisional playoff round the last five years with the underdogs 16-4 against the spread. Last year this Giants team obviously even won money line over the number one seed Dallas team. Enjoy this close game all the way down to the last minute!

But 1 of the reasons I hate the most - is the NFL’s Blackout Rule. Cant stand it -and I seriously think that Goodell should at least re-consider it.

College Football Betting, Nfl Betting or Both?
Written by admin on March 7, 2010 – 10:20 pm -
Size Matters: There are more than 120 college teams on the college football betting board while the NFL has just 32 teams. So, by pure mathematics alone, it’s about four times as difficult to keep up with college football as it is with the NFL.
Those large college numbers offer the bettor both risk and opportunity. For football bettors with the time, exploring the college football betting options may be the more rewarding choice. After all, in their rush to post wagering pointspreads, even the most experienced oddsmakers can’t get every line correct every week and occasionally misfire on a few games. That’s far more likely to happen at the collegiate level where, as the old adage goes, “bookmakers have to be right every time; bettors just once” gains added credence.
Getting to the Point(spread): You may live the rest of your life and not see Rice beat Texas in a college football game but no such stark mismatches exist in the NFL. In fact, even the Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts lost outright to Houston, Jacksonville and Tennessee last season, three teams that failed to make the playoffs. The largest pointspread differential in the NFL last year was 18, when the Colts welcomed the Titans to Indianapolis, Oct. 8. For the record, Indy prevailed, 14-13, but failed to cover.
The first 16 games of the 2007 NFL season opened with no team favored by more than seven points and a whopping nine contests where the line was a field goal or less.
Contrast that with the opening weekend of this year’s college season when no fewer than 16 games closed with pointspreads greater than 18, including two games above 30 and another pair of contests with lines of 40 points or more.
The larger numbers in the college football betting game also create greater volatility. For example, while top ranked USC opened as a 42 1/2-point favorite over Idaho, Sept. 1, gamblers pounded the Trojans, driving the line up to -49, a 6 1/2-point swing that you’ll never see happen in the NFL. USC failed to cover, winning, 38-10.
Also on Sept. 1, Michigan State was bet up from -17 to -23 against Alabama-Birmingham. The Spartans covered easily, 55-18.
This disparity in pointspreads creates a bit of a betting dilemma for bettors. The more conservative player may be better off concentrating on NFL betting, where no team is ever in a “can’t win” situation and the bettor isn’t apt to feel like a fool because a line has shifted significantly from the time it was posted to the time the player bet it.
The bettor with a more adventuresome streak may opt for college football betting where he could have, conceivably, laid 42 1/2 with USC and taken 49 with Idaho. He would have collected on both bets if the Trojans has won by 43-48 points. It didn’t work out this time but these highly desirable “middles,” where the shop-wise bettor gets both ends of a moving line, are available more often in the college game than its NFL counterpart.
The Known Versus the Unknown: With teams required to list injuries and the probability of players participating in each week’s game, there are fewer surprises in NFL betting. College teams, however, are under no obligation to post injuries and/or suspensions, adding another level of uncertainty to the NCAA wagering experience.
I Second That Emotion: Although division contests can stir the juices, for the most part, professional football players operate on an even emotional keel. Even NFL coaches’ halftime speeches tend to be more about Xs and Os than motivation.
But the college game, where impressionable teenagers dominate, is more influenced by emotion, witness a motivated Appalachian State, which scored an astonishing upset of overconfident Michigan, Sept. 1.
That’s just another factor that makes college football betting more difficult and more risky, but potentially more rewarding than the NFL.
When it comes to football betting, a player has to find his comfort zone.

2009 Nfl Pro Bowl Snubs and Notables
Written by admin on March 7, 2010 – 10:20 pm -
Now, the game may be absolutely meaningless, and it is probably one of the most boring games in sports, but the NFL Pro Bowl is an honor for players to be selected into. The official Pro Bowl rosters were released Tuesday, and there are a fair share of snubs to make cases for, and a number of notables to be congratulated.
AFC Notables
Andre Johnson, WR, Houston Texans
Even with the inconsistency at the quarterback position this season due to injury, Andre Johnson has come back to his form of two years ago. He has been the focal point of the Texans offense, and just came off of a colossal game against the Tennessee Titans in which he caught 11 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown. He is currently leading the league with 1,408 yards receiving.
Chris Johnson, RB, Tennessee Titans
This explosive rookie running back came into the league considered a reach in the nfl draft. Looking back on it, the Titans are considered genius for drafting him when they did. He is in the top ten in the league in total rushing yards and yards per carry, despite sharing the load with fellow back LenDale White. No one can argue about his speed, and Johnson has now quickly become one of the biggest offensive threats in the league.
Mario Williams, DE, Houston Texans
Formally known as the guy who got drafted over Reggie Bush in the 2006 NFL Draft, Mario Williams is now considered one of the top defensive ends in the league. After recording only 4.5 sacks in his rookie season, Williams was starting to be considered another gigantic draft bust. However, he rebounded in his second season and recorded 14 sacks, but failed to make the Pro Bowl. He has finally been selected into his first Pro Bowl this season, gaining recognition from his 11 sacks, 46 tackles, and 4 forced fumbles. Keep in mind, Williams is only 23 years old; he’s only just beginning.
James Harrison, LB, Pittsburgh Steelers
Harrison has become one of the more dominant linebackers in the league, and has deservingly been selected to his second consecutive Pro Bowl. He now leads the team with 15 sacks, which ties the franchise record, and has a chance to break it with two games left in the season. Harrison’s path to the NFL was very unique, as he went undrafted and made the team through the practice squad. He and his team have a big game ahead of them against the Tennessee Titans this week, a game which decides who has home-field advantage throughout the playoffs in the AFC. Don’t be surprised if Harrison comes out of that game with the franchise record-breaking sack. James Harrison is one of the great stories in the NFL, and is more than worthy of his second consecutive Pro Bowl.
Nnamdi Asomugha, CB, Oakland Raiders
Asomugha could have made a case to be in the Pro Bowl last season after recording a career-high 8 interceptions, but has made it this season with only one interception on the year. Now, only one interception may not sound like a Pro Bowl year, but nobody throws the ball his way. Asomugha has been recognized as a premier corner in the league, and is undoubtedly the most feared, as he has only been thrown to a handful of times. He is a big, physical man-to-man cover corner who has been looking for a long-term contract with the Raiders for the past two seasons. Now that Asomugha is gaining the type of recognition that he has, the Raiders will most likely be competing with a few other teams for that desired long-term contract this offseason.
Other notable selections: Jay Cutler (first selection), Brett Favre (10th selection), Joey Porter, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu, Leon Washington (Kick Returner)
NFC Notables
Anquan Boldin, WR, Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Kurt Warner, QB, Arizona Cardinals
First the Cardinals win their division for the first time in 33 years, then this. The Cardinals have made more history by becoming the first team to take a quarterback and two wide receivers from the same team to the Pro Bowl. Wide receivers Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald, along with quarterback Kurt Warner, have become some of the more efficient players in the league offensively, and this two-headed receiving tandem has clearly been the most dominant in the league. They have also been extremely troublesome for opposing defenses to game plan for, and their numbers have been nearly identical. Fitzgerald and Boldin have 88 and 89 catches on the season respectively, with Fitzgerald having more yards with 1,200, and Boldin having more touchdowns with 11. Warner has had a great year as well, recording 26 touchdowns, over 4,200 yards passing, and a 97.5 passer rating (which is third in the league). He has also been in the conversation for MVP of the league this year. All three of these guys continue to propel their stats, make history, win games, and now, make Pro Bowls together. (As well as increase their fantasy football rankings).
Drew Brees, QB, New Orleans Saints
Speaking of MVP discussions, Drew Brees has been flawless this season and is all but deserving of a Pro Bowl selection. Brees has currently thrown for a league-high 4,332 passing yards and 28 touchdowns. Even though his team has been performing at a mediocre level, Brees has performed at a level that has propelled him towards the top of the quarterback class. His team has also gone through many injuries on the offensive side of the ball throughout the season, but that hasn’t prevented Brees from competing at a Pro Bowl level, and has made a large case for MVP of the NFL this season.
Michael Turner, RB, Atlanta Falcons
Michael Turner, along with the rest of the Atlanta Falcons team, has been one of the pleasant surprises of the season. Now out of the shadow of LaDanian Tomlinson, Turner has been one of the key factors in turning this Atlanta team around. He is currently second in the league with 1,421 yards rushing, and is leading the league with 15 rushing touchdowns. Turner has now made a name for himself, and his team has as well; becoming legitimate playoff contenders in the NFC. This is Turner’s first 1,000-yard rushing season, and this is the first time he has been selected to the Pro Bowl.
Other notables: Roddy White (first selection), Steve Smith, Eli Manning (first selection), Adrian Peterson, Julius Peppers, DeMarcus Ware
AFC/NFC Snubs
To start this off as positive as possible, there are many players worthy of a Pro Bowl selection, but it is hard to place them above the players actually selected.
DeAngelo Williams of the Carolina Panthers has been playing better than any back in the NFL the past few weeks, and is in the top 5 in both rushing yards and touchdowns this season, but it is hard to shove him in the lineup with Peterson, Portis, and Turner already in. This isn’t an enormous snub, but I felt I had to throw it in there because of how well he’s done this season, and how big of a fan I am of his. He just had a great amount of competition.
Calvin Johnson is in the same boat. He is 5th in the league with 1,165 receiving yards, and has 10 touchdowns on the year. Despite having a depressing season (to say the least) with the Detroit Lions, Johnson has lived up to his hype coming out of college. He will be a top receiver in the league for years to come, but will have to wait on the Pro Bowl. Anquan Boldin, Larry Fitzgerald, and Steve Smith got in ahead of Johnson. Again, too much competition.
Matt Ryan is also in the same situation, but he should be just fine. His numbers were slightly better than that of Eli Manning’s, but it is hard to say he had an overall better season. He has been great to say the least, and has been the biggest component in making Atlanta a remarkable team in the NFC South. Matt Ryan has brought the city of Atlanta back to the Georgia Dome, and he will have plenty of seasons for his chance to go to Honolulu.
The last player in this situation is John Abraham of the Atlanta Falcons, who is third in the NFL in sacks and just came off of a 3-sack game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Abraham has been one of the biggest contributors in turning this Atlanta defense around, not to mention the team altogether. But it is very hard to argue Julius Peppers, Justin Tuck, or Jared Allen out of that Pro Bowl lineup. The NFC is full of talent at the defensive end position, and in this case, John Abraham is the odd man out.
Three of the top five players in tackles also didn’t make the Pro Bowl this season. (D’Qwell Jackson of the Cleveland Browns, Kirk Morrison of the Oakland Raiders, and London Fletcher of the Washington Redskins.)
Now, to the complete snubs.
First of all, the AFC quarterback lineup looks very weak, (with the exception of Peyton Manning) and there are a few quarterbacks of the AFC who can make large cases and should have been selected. Chad Pennington, Kerry Collins, and Matt Cassel would all be better selections then the ones who got in: Brett Favre and Jay Cutler.
Cutler is the quarterback for the most inconsistent team in the league, and is very inconsistent himself, and Favre’s performance has been almost the same. They both had great starts to the season, which has to be the only reason that they were even selected.
Pennington could easily be in this game, as he has led his team to one of the biggest turnarounds in NFL history, and is in the top five in total passer rating this season. Phillip Rivers has been what you would call consistent, leading the entire NFL with a total passer rating of 101.4. Matt Cassel has also been stellar this season, taking the reigns in New England after Tom Brady’s season-ending injury. And one quarterback that nobody has mentioned is Ben Roethlisberger, who is quarterbacking a Superbowl-caliber team and is also in the conversation for MVP of the league. No one can deny any of these quarterbacks’ performances this year, and I consider all of them snubbed, considering who made the Pro Bowl ahead of them this year.
Ryan Clady was also snubbed out of this year’s Pro Bowl. He had a great rookie season, giving up only a half a sack the entire year on the offensive line for the Denver Broncos, and was well deserving of a selection.
In Indianapolis, Dallas Clark was absolutely snubbed. There is no reason why he shouldn’t have been selected, and why Antonio Gates should have made it. Clark is currently 5th in receiving yards for all tight ends, and has 5 touchdowns on the year. Antonio Gates didn’t have these types of numbers, and plays for the most disappointing team in the NFL. This is just another example of a popularity contest when it comes to Pro Bowl voting.
The Pro Bowl is a privileged honor for players of the NFL, and multiple selections can elevate players to the most prestigious in the league. There were many deserving players this year, and as always, there were a fair share of snubs. But, to the fans, who cares? Does anybody even watch this game anyway?
